Pembunuh bijirin

In case anyone missed the newspaper article below taken from today's The Star... It certainly gave me a case of severe guffaws on a quiet, boring Saturday afternoon. Will appreciate it if anyone else has ( and I am certain there are tons of..) any other similar subtitling gems from the jokers translating our Malaysian movies/ tv shows to share here...

"KUALA LUMPUR: Anticipating a suspenseful evening in front of the big screen, ardent fans of the latest thriller waited for the “murderer in an ice hockey mask” to start slashing and killing partying teenagers.

However, some 15 minutes into the movie, there were sniggers among the audience, which later erupted into guffaws.

The reason?

“Serial killer” was subtitled as “pembunuh bijirin” (cereal killer) in Bahasa Malaysia.

In another cops-and-robbers movie shown on TV, during a shootout scene, “fire” was subtitled “api”. And when a man kissed his daughter and told her, “Goodnight, cutie pie”, the subtitles read, “Selamat malam, kuih manis.”

Such scenarios have placed translators of subtitles in a bad light. "

I remembered our very old Biology book (I think in sixth form) translating tissue culture to "Kebudayaan Tisu". Just shows how much progress has been made!

ps/ can someone give us some summer shine in london? fed up with the all day rain, especially on weekends :(

Freeze! - BEKU!

Another example was from Oprah. She was having a conversation and ended her line with the word "period" as in full-stop when making a strong statement.

Subtitles read: "...MENSTRUASI"

Szzzueeefeeeiii.... u (or rather the person who did the subtitles) have made my day.... really woken me up on a blue blue Monday morning... hohoho ;-P

How bout "hantu mak rempit" for Ghost Rider... Fine, that's my version... haha

Was chatting with Dan, Grace & Wins last Sat bout Transformers when we realised they're showing the cartoon series on Astro Ria. Imagine the anticlimax when Prime says, "autobots, transform & rolled-out" in BM! haha

Btw, Transformers was fantastic. What a thrill to watch our toys come to life. Think I'm going for th 3rd time... whoo-hoo! ;p

rene said...

Alamak! It's "maT rempit"...typing error. Thank goodness I'm not one of them translators, eh? :p

eric said...

Wohoho...rene din noe u such a die hard Transformers fan! girl leh...i tot only suka Barbie, Strawberry Short Cake etc..haha ;-)

Although I am a fan- I had a few of the smaller toys only- an evil cassette tape that can change to a robot (Lockjaw I think) and another one is one of the evil Constructicons(Mix Master I think).

Anyway I think the movie " Si- Transformasi" is a bit of a let down for me. Can't get over the Ah Beng look of Optimus Prime- what with the pink flames on his side and the fact that he actually has lips!! Megatron also I still like the old version that can transform into a gun- but that would suspend the law of physics la , not that we are all...ahem, all grown up.

Also not enough of the really cool characters in the movie ie. Jazz the Porsche- now of course a Carbriolet (I know Philip use to have the toy) and StarScream the fighter jet.

I still like the lengthy 2 hour animated aka cartoon version that most of us saw in tape form that was circulating around in class when we were in Form 1 or 2 haha..

Alamak, talking about Transformers, super malu-ating man. I actually fell asleep during the movie! Sci-fi is just not for me man.... I can never catch up with all the fast action. But, neither am I into Barbie or SSC too... haha, sounds like I had a deprived childhood ;-P

Woohooo watched transformers for the 2nd time yesterday!!! Still damn difficult to get tickets i-tell-u.

rene said...

Strawberry Short Cake?! Oi, is that supposed to be a tall joke for me? >:\

Was into Mask Crusaders & Thundercats as well... hey, they're already in the midst of producing the movie... Wonder who's playing Mummrah & Liono... HOOoooOOOO!

Eric, can't slot everything into 2 hrs lah. Yup, G1's classic but fact is, Frenzy's supposed to be a cassette as well so I guess they're trying to keep things up to date. Plus, if it ain't for sponsors like Chevy, they'd be spending more millions. Yet, I like Bumblebee as a beetle & isn't Barricade suppose to be a good guy? Hmm,.. Btw, I'm on the waiting list for the limited edition leader class series of Bumblebee... So the mahal yet so many want to buy... :\

KG, 3rd time in Mlk's new cinema? RM5 on Wednesdays. Cheap cheap... or I can introduce you to my regular DVD seller - Ah Hock... ;p

Tong Huey, no worries. You're just what Eric deemed as "a girl leh.." hehe. I'm kind of a tomboy as a kid lah.. But I do like Smurfs... lala la la la la... :p

Anonymous said...

Ohhh rene, lemme join u.... "lala la la la la" I was just humming this tune a few nights ago.... out of the blue...wahahaha

Tong Huey

rene said...

Haha.. Dear Smurfette, is Brainy (how appropriate!) still ill? All our "lala la la la la-ing" might really turn him blue... wahaha

Anonymous said...

Oh yes, the poor dude still isnt in tip top condition yet. The bug must really be something man! Hmm, perhaps we need to lala more to drive away the bug... hahahaha

Tong Huey

rene said...

Hey Tong Huey, imagine, if that works, it'll be a breakthru & we could open a medical centre called "lala land"... Wait... isn't that a term used for asylum?... Shucks... hahaha.

Anyway, I hope Eric recovers soon & pray you don't get infected with this "Die Hard 4.0" virus, ya... :p

Ok, i may be a lot behind in this post and comments but I just realised that there were 13 comments! KG got me scrutinizing the blog!

Anyway Eric, I don't think Barbie and SSC cartoons existed during ur time leh. Are you re-living your childhood and watching the girlie cartoons now because it was so not cool to watch carebears and smurf last time? :-P

eric said...

Got la..Barbi(e) has been around the States since the 60s n SSC cartoons also existed...at least from the Singapore tv channels hehe..(which I can receive from my Melaka home).
Anyway, funny how none of the 'girlie' cartoons like the above every made it to the big screens unlike the wham-bham GI Joe, Transformers etc...
Gotta admit though that I DID watch smurfs and carebears last time...even Gummy Bears, Scooby Doo, Thundercats, MASK, Voltron hehehe..

Szuefei said...

i liked voltron but OSW thinks it is crap!

Szuefei said...

Ok, which of you guys watched the magical world of gigi? now, common - don't be shy!

eric said...

voltron is nice in a crappy way... haha. heard of that gigi think before but i think may have yet seen the tooth-fairy rather than see that before

rene said...

Gigi?! I'd rather watch Doraemon (in cantonese).

Oh Szu Fei, OSW probably doesn't like Voltron cos it ain't violent enough? Did anyone tell you OSW used to wear this combat hat & go around shooting at everything in his way? If he didn't make it as an aircraft engineer, he'd make a heck of a terrorist, I tell ya!!! wahahaha...

rene said...

Ok, here's one for the road...

I once attended a party where we played "pass the parcel". One of those who ended up with the parcel had to kiss the toilet bowl unless he answered this stupid question correctly, "Who's stronger... Doraemon or Voltron?"
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
The answer's of course, Doraemon... who can pull anything out of his pocket... (inc. Voltron). hahaha...

rene said...

Oh, fyi, the guy who answered that question got accepted into Cambridge! Serious.

Szuefei said...

Hey guys, admit it lah. You all watched Gigi because it had nudity!!

KG said...

Wah....revelation.....wait while I go check out wikipedia for "the magical world of gigi"...

eric said...

SF, didnt OSW tell u dat he is a big GI Joe fan??
i do agree with rene up there that he has the potential to be the next oklahoma bomber. (maybe not in the osama league yet)...

Szuefei said...

GI GI GI Joe!

Hey, better not mention the "you know who" here man. Nanti kena tangkap.

Szuefei said...

OSW says: Eric, admit it, you like cheetarah! I know you had a boyhood crush - admit it! ... or was it Lion-O.

OSW says: Rene, admit it - I know you like He-man... or was it Papa smurf?

OSW says: KG, admit it - you wanted to be ultraman right? Ultraman, anda ada tiga minit lagi untuk hidup! Adakah Ultraman akan tewaskan raksasa... blah blah blah

OSW says: I didn't like GI Joe, I liked Capt Caveman, Road Runner, The Red Baron & Muttley, Yogi Bear

rene said...

oooh.. OSW's on a shooting spree again... & got GI Jane to do the work! hahaha...

OSW, we've known each other since diaper days & you didn't know I'm so NOT into the muscular He-man type? Sad lah you...

Fyi, my favourite cartoon series was Macross. Rick Hunter's so not like He-man.

KG, looks like we're breaking the record for 'number of hits' on this one, huh?

Szuefei said...

Me? GI Jane? I am not sure whether to take that as a compliment or not. Demi Moore right? Hmmm...

eric said...

Yah boy, OSW is on ritalin now - thats y he is so hyperactive! just main tembak aje..

yah cheetarah is not bad leh...hot bod! not so sure i like the asexual features of lion-o though..looks a bit gayish. maybe some one else's cup of tea

Szuefei said...

very bold eric

rene said...

Hmm,... someone's awfully quiet... KG?... KG?!...KKKGGGG!!! Oh no, I think KG's been shot!

Szuefei said...

wakakakakak~!

KG said...

"OSW says: I didn't like GI Joe, I liked Capt Caveman, Road Runner, The Red Baron & Muttley, Yogi Bear"
- Not sure whether you'll noticed, but OSW only likes hairy/feathery cartoons!? SF, get rid of the Gillette and leave those armpit hair alone!

I cannot post too many stuffs now just so to keep this pembunuh bijirin article on the main page ;)

Anonymous said...

Wow, record breaking indeed.... this post has 35 comments including mine. Ahh, the Road Runner and Yogi Bear are some of the characters I like too!

Anonymous said...

Oops, sorry, that was me Tong Huey making the above comment.

Szuefei said...

damn, secret is out!

eric said...

Personally i v much prefer the Looney Tunes series ie. Tweety bird and his/her "Puddy Tat" Slyvester, Bugs Bunny, Elmer Fudd, Tasmanian Devil and Daffy Duck..

I can still watch thru it on tv if there is really nothing else interesting to watch..

KG said...

I remember I liked Flinstones, The Jetsons...well cartoons being cartoons, I have no problem watching any of them at that time.

Szuefei said...

ahhh.. the jetsons! i remember that too.

Anonymous said...

Huh Jetsons?? I have never heard of that in Sg.... *scratches head*.... time to go do a Google pic search

Tong Huey

Anonymous said...

Ohhhh, THE JETSONS!! Now I geddit, thanks to Google. Yes yes, I remember the cartoon once I spotted the little antenna head boy. Had been watching it but had forgotten the name. Rather similar to the Flintstones too.

Tong Huey

Szuefei said...

wah kg, pecah record already leh... so the many comments already... gosh, we can surely go on and on about cartoons eh?

KG said...

You know how guys would always be little boys inside ;) Started about translation, then Rene decided to talk about Transformers cartoons and the dam burst.

Anyway for the 20th Anniversary reunion in 2011.....I suggest we have a theme party and everyone go as their favourite cartoon! Now that would be fun!

Szuefei said...

cartoon character? that would be really fun but i tell you, to get you guys to wear a costume - that would be a million dollar challenge!

eric said...

i'll go as doogie howser MD (naw...dats not a cartoon). or how abt Dr Who ? (the comic character)

OSW to go as Captain Caveman !!

rene said...

Agree with SF. Oi, we'd be almost 40 by then lei... That's if KG "survives" after posting that comment... hahaha.

rene said...

Ok ok,.. I shall not be a party pooper. If OSW goes as Captain Caveman, I'll paint myself blue (since I'm short enough)... kekeke.

Dr Who, Eric? No fun wan... We all know you're Dr who lah... hehe.

Anonymous said...

Ok, OSW & family will go as Captain Caveman and family.... the Lees can go as The Flintstones. Another will go as The Jetsons. The telematches can be played against each family.... some 'inspiring' suggestion from the "about-to-knock-off" me ;-P

Oh ya, I just saw the message Eric left in the chatbox and thought of transferring it here since there could be a bigger audience. We will be back in Melaka this Friday evening and returning on Sunday afternoon. Would anyone be free to meet up on Sat night? I would like to relive my long lost memory of satay celup.... anyone one for a meet-up then?

Tong Huey

KG said...

Rene, you have to dye your hair blond too and get that cute little white dress to go. By 2011 too, you would have found your papa smurf ;)

SW can skip shaving for a month and leave the whiskers on....throw on a rug, bring a club heheheh then on that night, he would have to slug SF on the head and drag her there :)

Szuefei said...

Eric as fred flinstone?! you've got to be kidding right?! Huiz, you've got a lot to do if you want him to appear as fred flinstones! you have to start feeding him LoADS before 2011 plus, you guys would need to make little pebbles and start looking for a dino.

Wakakaka.. i still can't get it off my head - you guys in costumes! LOL.

Szuefei said...

Mr & Mrs Flinstones - we'll be back in Mcca too! Satay celup sounds great. How about Bourne Ultimatum too? After Satay celup? Rene, how about it?

rene said...

Yabadabadoooo! Count me in & let's have a cartoon of a time.

SF, I'm sure "The Flintstones" will find their dino here in ancient city. There are loads of big biawaks at the back of my house. haha.

Very farnee, KG... Btw, will you be back then?

Anonymous said...

Shucks, I should have chosen The Jetsons instead! Wakakaka....

Bourne after satay? Err what time would that roughly be? Better not return too late for the sake of the elders....

Tong Huey

Szuefei said...

bourne ultimatum isn't going to jadi lah... it isn't even out yet!!! ARGH! what lah!

looks like satay celup onlee loh

Anonymous said...

Ok, SF, on! So where's a good place for the makan? What about the time? Hmm, who shall be there in Melaka then?

Tong Huey

KG said...

Aiyor....no Bourne then follow the theme of the month lah....go watch the new cartoon Ratatouille-lor....so the next re-union can go as a rat!

Tong Huey, you can still go as the Simpsons family.....and you can have a nice them doing up your hair. Eric has receding hairline, so all he needs now is a beer belly and he's good for Homer :)

Szuefei said...

And you people who's gonna enjoy the satay celup in Melaka, please do take some photos and write a nice short essay ok? ERIC, look at the comments your pembunuh bijirin article has generated.

Anonymous said...

Err, I think I would prefer to stop at Lisa. Still a staunch supporter of LKY's ancient "stop at 2" policy.... kekeke.

Oh yes, I have my cammie nicely tucked away in my bag now :)

Tong Huey

Szuefei said...

OK TH, - when I read the word "cammie" - i was like OOohhh.... someone's getting lucky... and is really going to work on getting Bart & Lisa...

then i read again and thought a camisole is really out of context here so you are talking about your camera right? :-P

we'll call you on sat. we'll be there on sat morning.

Anonymous said...

Hahahaha, yes, cammie = my camera. I cannot imagine myself tucking any of my precious children in travel bags and smuggling them across the customs.... hehehe.
