128th Birthday

Hi CKG,

I don't know how to put up a new post in the SFI blog (perhaps you can teach me sometime) but would like to inform everyone that SFI is celebrating its 128th birthday at the Quadrangle on 5th April 2008. I have enclosed a jpg image of the advert taken from the Green and White July - December 2007 issue. I was wondering how many of us could and want to make it there this year - I can try to arrange the tickets (don't know how much but I guess it is affordable) for those interested including yours truly. Problem is I would be away from 17/3 till maybe 3/4 and would find it hard to coordinate with everyone. So if you could coordinate with all and give me the final numbers, I can do the rest.

Tell me what you think ok?

Beyonce treat for fans in KL
By ELIZABETH LOOI

Beyonce: She’s a songwriter, model, record producer, dancer and fashion designer.PETALING JAYA: Beyonce, one of the world’s biggest rhythm and blues stars, will perform in Kuala Lumpur on Nov 1.

Malaysia will be one of the stops, besides Thailand, for the award-winning singer’s debut appearance in South-east Asia.

Pineapple Concerts chairman Razlan Ahmad Razali said Beyonce’s management had agreed to stage a concert in Malaysia.

“We are now working out details, such as the terms and conditions and the venue,” he told The Star in an interview.

Pineapple Concerts is well known for bringing big bands into the country, including Earth, Wind and Fire and Grammy winner Kanye West earlier this year.

Beyonce Knowles, 26, rose to stardom as the lead singer of all-girl trio Destiny’s Child in the late 1990s.

She released her debut solo album in 2003 and grabbed five Grammy Awards the following year.

Beyonce’s latest album, B’Day, won her another Grammy this year – making it her 10th in all – in the Best Contemporary R&B Album category.

She has also won awards for hits such as Deja Vu (which she also recorded in Spanish), Beautiful Liar (a duet with Shakira) and Irreplaceable, and led the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards with seven nominations.

Beyonce has acted in several movies, among them Austin Powers in Goldmember, The Pink Panther and Dreamgirls.

Dreamgirls garnered her nominations for Best Actress in Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, and Best Original Song (Listen).

She is also a songwriter, model, record producer, dancer and fashion designer.

KUALA LUMPUR: R&B star Beyonce Knowles has scrapped plans to stage her first concert in Malaysia amid speculation she objected to a strict dress code barring sexy attire, industry officials said Monday.

Knowles will instead head for neighbouring Indonesia, which although also Muslim has less stringent rules about how performers should dress and behave.

Knowles' Los Angeles-based talent agency, International Creative Management, said her Nov 1 date with Kuala Lumpur had to be broken “due to a scheduling conflict,'' according to an ICM statement made available by Malaysian entertainment organisers Pineapple Concerts.

The announcement followed recent speculation that Knowles, famous for her sexy image and skimpy outfits, was reluctant to fulfil the Malaysian government's demand for female performers to cover up from the top of their chests to their knees, including their shoulders.

“It is with regret that we announce the cancellation of The Beyonce Experience World Tour in Kuala Lumpur,'' the ICM statement said.

“It was to mark the very first time the performer would bring her show to Malaysia.''
Knowles will perform in Jakarta instead on Nov 1, the statement said, adding that Knowles “is looking forward to performing for all her fans in Kuala Lumpur in the near future.''

Pineapple Concerts chairman Razlan Ahmad Razali said his company, which has brought Western acts such as Kanye West and Earth, Wind and Fire to Malaysia, was “disappointed and frustrated.''

Razlan declined to comment on the rumours that Knowles balked at Malaysia's decency code. However, he noted that besides Indonesia, Knowles is now slated to travel over the next month to many other Asian countries, including Thailand, China and India. – AP

The Circus is in Town!!!

[updated: 23 August 2007]- Check out the photos below.

I remember going to the Royal London Circus way back in Malacca while still in school. If I'm not mistaken it was at the reclaimed land before the development of Melaka Raya. Maybe someone with a better memory could correct me or put a date to it.

Anyway, it has made it's way up to Selangor now...Taman Puchong Utama, to be more exact. We are planning to go this Sunday (19 August) at 5pm. We should be getting the C seats at RM30. Whoever's in town, you are obliged to drop everything (except your very pregnant wife, kid or aged parents) and join us then. Leave your name in the comment below before Friday ok?

Confirmed attending:
1. SW
2. SF & daughter
3. CKG

People from Singapore are encouraged to take advantage of the weaker Ringgit to drive down to PJ and enjoy the show ;-)

[updated: 23 August 2007]

While the show wasn't outstanding, it had it's moments, and probably worth the RM30 weekend ticket. The thing that pissed me off was the way the tickets were sold. I went the night before and was told that I can't actually buy any tickets but was instead given a receipt to collect the tickets at least 2 hours before the show. I mean, it's the next day and they could just give me those tickets so that I could at least confirm our seats. Afraid that I maybe late (I was, sorry), I had to drive all the way to Puchong to get the tickets in the morning before returning at 5pm again just to watch the show. Ridiculous arrangement.

Anyway, here are some pictures taken during the show....courtesy of Szue Fei. There were more photos and some of the acts are not shown here. So just treat this as a quick preview. If you have nothing to do on a weekend, then get your *** down to Puchong for the circus!

The welcoming act.

A balancing act.

What circus would be complete without the elephant?

Fallen angel

A man, his horse, his 2 dogs and a monkey......Merdeka!

The new sliming craze is in town!

The best act of the show!

Central Market, The Annexe, Sharing Space Photo Exhibition

Central Market, located in Kuala Lumpur is place to go to for Malaysian handicraft and arts center. Built as the main wet market before the war, the place was converted to it's current state in the 80s.

This was my second time to Central Market, the first time being in the early 90s when I first worked in PJ. I must say it's much easier to get here. I took the LRT to the Pasar Seni station, and just cross the street and you are there. There's also a parking lot in front of the Central Market but I reckon it's easier to take the public transport then risk getting stuck in the traffic.

Inside, the whole place is air conditioned and brighly lit, with lots of shops selling local handicrafts, fashion accessories, souveniours and snacks. There are also food courts and restaurants to tuck in some local cuisine.

Anyway the reason for my trip to Central Market is to visit the Sharing Space photo exhibition, a contemporary photography of Japan & Malaysia. Unfortunately, I can only visit this exhibition on it's last day so by the time you are reading this, they have already busy preparing for the next programme.

The Annexe is located at the other end of Central Market. There were a few art gallery on the ground floor, a cafe on the first floor, some studio on the 2nd floor while the Gallery is located on the top floor.

A shot of one of the walls with the photos. Note the 3 photos on the left are by Pang Khee Teik.

Gallery III.

I like the open space of the 3 galleries displaying the photos. There were interesting topics, themes, print types and sizes photography. Generally, it is an interesting exhibition and unfortunately the prices for the photos would have wiped out my retirement funds so I only went back with fond memories of the works.

Some shots from the gallery window.

No, this isn't an exhibit.

OK, I thought it's a new bank in KL.... KOK Bank.....hmmm I wonder who their customer base are....

One Night in Singapore

The story of its origins: Not so long ago, word has come to me that our arch rivals across the Chan Koon Cheng road in Malacca, the Not-So-Low School has been spreading its tentacles all across the causeway in this Little Red Dot here, for quite some time. As they already had a not inconsiderable number of disciples here meeting regularly, the question that arose was : can we Franciscans here make a same show of solidarity...if not better?

After a month or two of clandestine emails, frantic phone calls and quickie MSNs... the results are for all to see below :

Group picture of our little Singapore gathering of Franciscans and their families. However, not in this picture are Teo HT (who left early but is in the below frame), Choy Wei Lun (MIA with OT work) and Loo Chiang Yau (stuck in office...those of you with longer memories will remember this lad who was with us from Standard 1 to 6)

Mr, Mrs Teo and young Jasper Teo... as well as Chia Yee and the missus.
[Edit: image removed by request 11th March 2022]

3 green bottles on the wall....and then there are 2 green bottles... and then 1 green bottle and finally there is none.

And poor Geok Pin has to placate his young boy on the mystery of the ever decreasing booze.

Hmm... By the looks on her face, maybe Ee Fen knew where it disappeared.
