Ratatouille!

I re-read the old satay chelup post where KG mentioned about posting various makan places (new and old) in Malacca so out-of-towners like myself can go to try... So any contributions guys?? I 'll start the ball rolling with the new satay chelup place we visited 2 moons ago..

Place: Ujong Pasir- the old post office shop house before turning into Taman Sinn

Food: Forget about the copy cat versions in KL and Singapore with plain boiled water or the Mala Hotpot from China, this is the pure unadulterated Malacca version that we all Malaccans have been brought up to eat. Like Ratatouille is to the French, together with the old si hum with kangkung dish, this is our version of 'peasant' food - and how we folks like them ! Of course the more 'atas' city folks may call this version 'unhygienic' due to the common dipping technique involved and goodness knows when the shopkeeper has last changed the dipping sauce- but hey folks, if this don't toughen up your stomach, nothing much else will. Just make sure you guys have your Hepatitis A vaccination up to scratch and have plenty of charcoal tabs on standby in case the unthinkable happens...
But seriously folks, althought the satay chelup is nothing much to crow about as compared to other more established places ie. in Ong Kim Wee or the one opposite UE pau shop, this one is definitely much less crowded and is ideal for a bit of tete-a-tete after the makan instead of having prospective customers hovering around your elbows hoping to 'chope' your table. Variety wise, I feel it is adequate thought not extravagant and the dipping sauce wise is neither too sweet or too hot - the chili wise.

Service: Friendly shop keeper/ proprietor who is quite willing to top up our dipping sauce ..maybe also because there is not many other customers yet, although we were there at 9.30 pm. And I also noted his thoughtfulness when ta pao-ing some pieces of the satay for our makan companion while offering to put in some sauce as well- not many people do that though.

Wallet: Does it it this part of the anatomy hard? Can't remember this part much especially as to the cost per stick. All I can say is that for a post dinner makan for a group of 2 guys and 3 women and 1 growing boy, the damage done is about RM$60. I do think this is about the average.

Ohhh, now I know why Eric sms-ed on Sat afternoon asking me if I remembered how much our satay cost. Coincidentally, I was at the supermarket buying ingredients to make Ratatouille then! Haha....

Anyway, guys and babes, yeah, do contribute more lobangs on good eateries in Melaka so that I can have even more things to look forward to whenever I go back :)
